LaDainian Tomlinson - The Vikings wined and dined LaDainian Tomlinson on Wednesday night, then spent much of Thursday meeting with the star running back. Tomlinson emerged from Vikings headquarters on Thursday evening with a purple Vikings jersey in hand, but pulled away in a black limousine without a deal in place. Tomlinson declined to comment to reporters before the limo drove away, but several people with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that the two sides had yet to reach a deal and Tomlinson was headed to the New York Jets for a visit on Friday. ( 3/12/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: With the Jets, Tomlinson would be expected to back up Shonn Greene, who emerged in his rookie season and helped make Thomas Jones expendable in New York. His Fantasy appeal would actually be a little bit better there because Greene isn't as established as Adrian Peterson and could give way to more work for Tomlinson. If he ends up with the Jets we'd view him as a low-end No. 2/top-end No. 3 Fantasy RB (and he'd hurt Shonn Greene's value), but with the Vikings he'd be a low-end No. 3 RB. We'll continue to keep you posted.

Clinton Portis - The Redskins announced Friday that they have signed RB Larry Johnson, who finished the 2009 season with the Bengals after being released by the Chiefs. In eight NFL seasons, Johnson has played in 82 career games with 55 starts. The two-time Pro Bowler has totaled 6,219 career rushing yards and 55 touchdowns on 1,421 carries (4.4 avg.) and 154 career receptions for 1,373 yards (8.9 avg.) and six touchdowns. "We are excited to bring in a running back that has had so much success in this league," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. "Larry is a physical runner who will be a great addition to our backfield." Johnson is expected to be the No. 2 RB in Washington behind starter Clinton Portis. ( 3/12/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: Johnson, 30, could push Portis for the starting role in training camp, but we still expect Portis to the No. 1 option for the Redskins. Still, Portis now must prove he can return to being a prominent Fantasy option or else he could lose touches to Johnson. Portis played only eight games last year due to a concussion and had a career-low 494 yards. But there is a lot expected of Portis, who started his career playing for Shanahan in Denver in 2002-03 before he was traded to Washington for Champ Bailey. He rushed for 1,500 yards in each of those two seasons with 29 touchdowns. While we don't expect Portis to duplicate those stats, he could see a boost in value based on how Shanahan has done with running backs in his coaching career -- he has coached 11 individual 1,000-yard rushing seasons in Denver from 1995-2008. Even with Johnson now on the roster, consider Portis a No. 2 Fantasy option worth a pick beginning in Round 3 or 4.

Larry Johnson - The Redskins announced Friday that they have signed RB Larry Johnson, who finished the 2009 season with the Bengals after being released by the Chiefs. "Larry is a physical runner who will be a great addition to our backfield." ( 3/12/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: Johnson, 30, will likely be the No. 2 RB in Washington behind starter Clinton Portis, although Johnson could push Portis for the starter's role in training camp. Johnson had a disappointing season in 2009 after struggling to start the year in Kansas City and then not doing much once he joined the Bengals. While Johnson could do well under Shanahan -- he has coached 11 individual 1,000-yard rushing seasons in Denver from 1995-2008 -- Portis is still expected to get the majority of touches. And based on Johnson's age and rapid decline in production, he should only be viewed as a late-round pick on Draft Day.

Chad Ochocinco - Ochocinco, already involved in ABC show Dancing with the Stars, will star on a VH1 reality dating show. ( 3/11/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: Ochocinco said on his Twitter account that he expects to meet 85 women in an elimination-type show.

Antonio Bryant - Bryant's agent said the receiver and the Cincinnati Bengals were ``very close'' to an agreement on Wednesday, a move that would likely preclude the addition of Terrell Owens. For the second year in a row, the Bengals are trying to find a complement for Chad Ochocinco, the only receiver with appreciable experience on the roster. Ochocinco has lobbied to get Owens, who was in town on Wednesday to meet team officials. ( 3/11/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: Bryant visited a day earlier and left without a deal in place. Agent Lamont Smith didn't return a phone call on Wednesday, but told the team's Web site that the sides were ``very close'' to a deal. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Bryant would get a four-year, $28 million contract. The 29-year-old receiver had career highs with 83 catches for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns with Tampa Bay in 2008.

Ray Rice - Nothing has changed as far as Ray Rice's role in the Ravens' offense, but the Ravens' offense has added some new players that could change how they operate. The additions of Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth to their receiving corps along with the re-signing of veteran Derrick Mason hint that Baltimore won't hesitate to throw in situations this season that it might have run in last season. The Ravens threw more than ran in 2009, but it was close (510 passing attempts vs. 468 rushing attempts); the difference could be larger between the two sides now that the receiving corps has been improved. ( 3/11/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: Don't take this as a warning that Rice will be a bust, but do re-consider his value. Remember, Rice led the Ravens with 78 receptions in '09, with Derrick Mason second at 73 and Todd Heap third with 53. There are more mouths to feed in Baltimore, and those short passes that went to Rice in 2009 could go to Boldin and Mason in 2010. We still consider Rice a No. 1 Fantasy RB, but we wouldn't take him higher than fifth overall on Draft Day. Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew and Michael Turner are all better bets than Rice.

Derrick Mason - After twice reaching outside the organization to enhance their receiving corps, the Ravens secured one of their own, signing two-time Pro Bowler Derrick Mason to a two-year deal. Mason's future with the Ravens appeared unclear after the Ravens obtained free agent wideout Donte' Stallworth and traded for Anquan Boldin. Mason hinted after the 2009 season that he might retire, and there was also a chance he would sign with another team. But now he's set to end his career with Baltimore, and his return assures third-year quarterback Joe Flacco a familiar target to go with Stallworth and Boldin. "This is outstanding, just great news for the Ravens," coach John Harbaugh said. "Our coaches are happy. Derrick's teammates are happy and you know Joe is smiling. ... We would have lost something special if Derrick had gone to another team. We have gotten better in the last couple of days." ( 3/11/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: With the arrival of Boldin and Stallworth, Mason's chances of posting his ninth 1,000-yard campaign in 10 seasons take a big hit. We expect to see him morph into Flacco's possession receiver while Stallworth stretches the field deep and Boldin falls somewhere in between. Because Mason isn't expected to have a solid year statistically, Fantasy owners shouldn't consider him anything more than a safe No. 3 WR worth a middle- to late-round pick.

Kyle Orton - Orton could face competition since the Broncos have acquired Quinn from the Cleveland Browns for fullback Peyton Hillis and a 2011 draft pick. ( 3/14/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: It's unlikely that orton will lose his starting job to Quinn, who went 3-9 in 12 starts for Cleveland, which acquired him in the first round of the 2007 draft.
|
Shaun Hill - The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports that the 49ers have given permission to QB Shaun Hill to seek a trade. Following the signing of QB David Carr, Hill figured to be the odd man out of the team's quarterback rotation. Hill entered the 2009 season as the starter but didn't play well and eventually lost the gig to Alex Smith, who enters 2010 as the starter. ( 3/12/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: Hill will try to land somewhere where he can battle for a starting job. He's very low on the Fantasy totem pole at this point and isn't worth a draft pick this summer.

Kevin Faulk - The New England Patriots have agreed to terms with running back Kevin Faulk. The versatile 11-year veteran has spent his entire career with the Patriots, helping them win three Super Bowls. He was an unrestricted free agent, but the team announced Wednesday night on its Twitter page that he would be returning. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ( 3/11/2010 )
Fantasy Analysis: The 33-year-old Faulk ran for 335 yards and caught 37 passes for 301 yards and scored three touchdowns last season. Faulk has 3,505 yards rushing and 418 receptions for 3,605 yards in his career and has also been a steady contributor returning kicks and punts.
